SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Good Friday! We have reached the end of the work week and we start on Friday with a cold front crossing the state.
Wind gusts ahead of the front and blustery winds behind it, and sadly, as the front cools the temperatures a bit, it actually carries thicker forest fire smoke into the state. The thicker smoke is the result of a westerly flow following the front with serious air quality issues.
We should see unhealthy air in Salt Lake County and air deemed “unhealthy for sensitive groups†in counties such as Tooele, Davis, Box Elder, Weber and Utah.
Smoke from forest fires contributes to the increase in particulate matter and we already have high ozone levels in the summer.
Air quality issues will be a problem for the next few days.
Winds will be a problem in front and behind the front. Gusts of wind are expected ahead of the front and windy conditions behind.
The winds contribute to a red flag warning and elevate the fire danger on I-70 near Green River and Moab until 8 p.m. Winds will be gusty throughout the day in the southwestern desert, and noticeably cooler highs are ahead.
Expect the mid-80s along the Wasatch front, and an 80s and 90s range throughout the rest of the state.
St. George and Lake Powell will see triple-digit temperatures, but that’s the norm for St. George at this time of year. The city will reach 102 today with gusty winds.
