Mars arrives like an unusually warm lamb

SALT LAKE CITY – The calendar may show March 3, but the mercury in your thermometer indicates odd weather in northern Utah, with temperatures closer to April or May on the Wasatch front.

“Almost 60 degrees, very, very hot,” KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman commented in the Utah Morning News Wednesday, adding that he expected the hot weather to last all weekend.

The weather for March in Utah can range from snowy and cold to mild and sunny, but the average high temperature for the month in Salt Lake City is still only 55 degrees. Typically, the region can expect seven rainy days in March and average low temperatures of around 38 degrees.

Several consecutive days of highs over 60 lines better match the April averages for the region, Weyman said.

“[It’s] feel like spring, and not just for a day or two, but temperatures well above average for the next few days, ”he added.

He expected another storm to arrive early to mid-next week to bring temperatures back to more normal levels for March.

However, in recent years, northern Utah has experienced unusually warm weather in March. For example, March 6, 2020 was the hottest March 6 on record for Salt Lake City, with a high of 70 degrees. And several days of March set records in March 2017 with highs above 70.
