SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Happy April Fool’s Day everyone! While the world is going through some crazy times right now, we thought it would be fun to remember some of the fun times that have happened in Utah sports history.

Whether you are a fan of the Cougars, Utes, Aggies or Jazz, we have found some awkward / funny pranks and moments that have happened in recent years.

Rudy Gobert’s popcorn-filled vehicle at the Utah Jazz Center

When all-star center Rudy Gobert was a rookie for the Utah Jazz, he forgot to bring donuts to the team’s pre-game shootout. His teammates brought him a bag and released a mess of butter inside his Range Rover.

Utah Football Trick Punt vs. Oregon in 2015

Our own Tom Hackett helped the Utes play a solid prank at the Ducks in 2015. Hackett executed a false punt that led to a Utah touchdown in their resounding 62-20 win over Oregon.

Utah Jazz owner Gail Miller plays pranks on Joe Ingles

In January 2020, Utah Jazz forward Joe Ingles joined ESPN’s Zach Lowe on the Lowe Post Podcast to discuss a funny story Lowe overheard on the Jazzman. Ingles recapped a story from a few seasons ago when Jazz owner Gail Miller played a prank on her. During a jazz match, Ingles dove into the crowd for a loose ball and accidentally landed on the Miller. Not knowing who he had landed on by then, Ingles stood up and continued to play. After the game, Jazz executives and head coach Quin Snyder lured Ingles into a room in the arena. As the Jazzman entered the room, he saw Miller. The owner of the Jazz as well as the team leaders made Ingles believe that he had injured the owner during the play. After having fun, Ingles discovered that Miller already needed surgery and the Jazzman was not to blame.

BYU Basketball’s “Big Brother” Message to the State of Utah

Following a Cougars overturn in Utah state in 2009, BYU responded with a win over the Aggies in 2010. Jimmer Fredette led the Cougs with 26 points. After the victory, Marriott Center video panels displayed a message saying, “Dear UT St. Take advantage of the LOSS! I love you, your big brother BYU! “

Utah Jazz Bear lets the birthday cake slide

The Utah Jazz mascot ‘Bear’ attempted to show off the birthday cake he had for a jazz fan in the upper bowl of the arena in 2012. Bear accidentally dropped the cake from the upper deck to the lower bowl of the arena and on some fans. Fortunately, no one was injured and the fans had a blast with the crash!

BYU Football going on the 4th and 19th

BYU fans will remember this infamous piece for years to come. Kalani Sitake and the Cougars decided to throw a fake punt from their own five-yard line in a game against Boise State in 2016. Adding to the difficulty of a fake punt, BYU needed 19 yards. for a first try. Needless to say, the play didn’t go as planned. Asked about the play call, Sitake said, “We thought we had it.”

Utah WR Kaelin Clay drops football before hitting the goal line

This one is remembered by Utah fans. Kaelin Clay of Utah received a assist from Utes quarterback Travis Wilson and was heading into the end zone and a touchdown. The only problem was that Clay dropped the ball just before crossing the goal line. Oregon quickly realized the Utah receiver’s mistake, recovered the ball and returned it for a Ducks touchdown.
